I want to give a shout out to “Stanley” thermos bottles… available at most stores… short story… almost 15 years ago… I purchased a 2 qt. Stanley thermos at Walmart and paid almost $40 for it… even then… it was fine until maybe 5 years ago and then it stopped keeping coffee warm… not even for a few hours… I have no idea what happened but it just wore out I guess… anyway, I put it on the shelf and happened to read where they had a life time warranty… so… I wrote Stanley and email and they told me take a picture of the bottom of the thermos and send it to them… I did, with an explanation and in less than 24 hours they told me they would send me a new one in a couple of weeks… exactly one week later, I got a brand new Stanley thermos… now that is a great warranty… and I put coffee in it at 1:30pm today… went hunting and at 6:30pm… I poured about the 5th or 6th cup and it was still really hot… now that is a great thermos… Way to go “Stanley”!!!! The old and the new… I still want to know why the other one stopped working… it is stainless steel and as far as I know it did not have one of those breakable insides… so what happened??? anybody have a clue??
STEAM LOCOMOTIVES AND DUCK BLINDS
By: PAUL ORTON
My Stanley Thermos was passed on to me by my father. He was an engineer for the Wabash railroad, which was later acquired by Norfolk Southern. He carried on the steam locomotives and later the big diesels between the early 1950’s and 1976 when he retired due to health problems. Dad died in 1977 after a short battle with cancer. That is the main reason this old Stanley is so important to me. He showed me how to use a pot of boiling water (per the instructions still on the bottom) to preheat the thermos. I don’t think Dad ever carried any cold liquids in it, and neither have I come to think of it! One cold early fall night he took me to a nearby small town tractor pull-our old Ford Falcon had a really bad heater, but our Stanley at least provided us with hot coffee to help us stay warm on the way home! I have dropped this old thermos in wet, muddy duck blinds, it has fallen from deer stands and even off the top of my truck when I forgot it was up there, but it has never failed to keep things hot. I now bring it with me every day to work and I am sure some of my co-workers wonder why I bring this battered old thermos to my comfy desk job, but I do it because it reminds me so much of my Dad and the great moments we shared over a cup of piping hot coffee from our Stanley thermos.
THREE GENERATIONS AND COUNTING
By: PAGE GERRICK
My grandfather grew up in the Great Depression, poor and hard working like so many of that era. At 17, he went off and joined the Navy to fight in World War II. His mother’s parting gift was a Stanley thermos that came with a note “Come home safe, son. And always drink your coffee hot”. That thermos kept his coffee hot from dawn until dusk, through battles and across the Pacific. When my grandfather worked in the steel mill he took that same thermos with him every day. My father worked summers alongside my grandfather to put himself through college, and on his first day, he got a Stanley with a note saying “You’ll never regret a day of honest hard work. And always drink your coffee hot”. My father became an insurance man, and always took his Stanley to work with him every day. On my first hunt at 7 years old, my father told me the legacy of his Stanley, and said one day, I too would have one. My Stanley arrived on the morning of my first job at 16, when I was going off to learn the finer points of pouring a concrete foundation. The Stanley came with piping hot coffee, and a note saying “Listen more than you talk, and learn all you can. And always drink your coffee hot”. Now I’m 30, work in the same industry as my father, and I take my Stanley to work every day. I’m the third generation of Gerrick’s to own and love my Stanley, and I expect that when I have children I’ll initiate them into the Gerrick tradition of “always drink your coffee hot, and out of a Stanley”. After 72 years my grandfather’s Stanley is still going strong, just like he is. We are loyal to Stanley, just as Stanley has been loyal to us. That kind of loyalty you just don’t find in too many places anymore.
THE GREAT REUNION
For years my grandfather packed a thermos full of hot coffee when he went to work at the railroad. In over 40 years he had 2 (he lost the first one). And after he retired his house was hit by a tornado and it was lost to the winds. I found an old picture of the one he had and bought another for the 10 year anniversary of the tornado. I went over to help cut some trees and I had made some coffee that morning to put in it. After a couple hours we took a break and I pulled it out and we shared a cup. When I told him it was a gift to replace the old one I saw a tear roll down his cheek. Having that thermos reminded him of the good times and good friends he had working and now he carries it every time he leaves home. My dad has had one since he got his first job, and he got my brother and I one the first day of our first jobs. It’s a family tradition that I’m happy to carry on. What a good dependable product that is also a good tradition.
